2nd graders teach coding to kindergarteners

Given the fact that students in 2nd grade are being asked to participate in that digital world without the direct oversight of their teachers as they complete their homework, we needed to ensure our 2nd grade digital citizenship curriculum prepared students for that responsibility.

The Frida Kahlo dress

The Goldfish and Starfish embarked on a study of Frida Kahlo. They learned about her artistic life, where she was from and about her love for making self-portraits. Our pre-K curriculum already incorporates self-portraits, so this was the perfect way to connect the study of Frida Kahlo to a familiar theme.

Seeing To Kill a Mockingbird

This November, the Avenues 8th grade saw Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway production of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, starring Jeff Daniels and Celia Keenan-Bolger, at the Shubert Theater on Broadway.

The educational philosophy of the early childhood years at Avenues is based on an underlying respect for the individual child. With this in mind, we provide an environment rich in opportunities for each child to grow in their understanding of language and how to work and play with others.

Sylvia Guimarães has joined Avenues São Paulo as director of community engagement. Sylvia has extensive experience in education outreach, non-profit management, and social justice initiatives, especially in regards to literacy.

Ryan Sawtell joins Avenues São Paulo as a lead World Course educator for Os Primeiros. In August he will join the full faculty to teach Mastery in the Secondary Division. Most recently, Ryan worked at Harlem Village Academies High, where he taught teaching Theory of Knowledge, Spanish, and European Art and Architecture. In this role he collaborated across academic departments to develop learner-centered curricula that link content knowledge and skills with relevant local and global issues.

On Tuesday, June 5, the class of 2018 graduated from Avenues New York. They're moving on to great things, and we couldn't be happier for them. 

 

Global Journeys Chile 2018


Over spring break 2018, upper grades students explored cultural diversity, biodiversity and climate change in Chile. 

Global Journeys China 2018


Middle grades students traveled to Guilin, China to advance their Chinese language abilities and deepen their understanding of Chinese culture.
