Aaron Van Borek will join Avenues São Paulo in August as an instructional coach for the Primary Division. In this role, he will inspire and empower teachers with professional development to improve student learning. Aaron is known for his deep understanding of curriculum design, project-based learning, assessment development, as well as skillful facilitation of collaborative teamwork among teachers. Whether he’s working with students, teachers, or administrators, Aaron knows that powerful learning depends on strong, meaningful relationships.
Aaron has worked at highly regarded schools around the world. Most recently, Aaron worked at Graded, the American School of São Paulo. During his seven years there, he was first a 3rd grade teacher and then a Teaching & Learning Coach for over 70 members of the Lower School faculty. Prior to his time at Graded, Aaron lived in the United Arab Emirates, where he taught 3rd grade at the Universal American School of Dubai. In Mexico City, Aaron taught 2nd and 4th grade at Escuela Sierra Nevada Lomas. In the early years of his career, he built on his teaching experience in St. Vincent in the Caribbean and in his native Canada.
Professional development has been integral to Aaron's career as a classroom teacher and instructional coach. He has completed extensive coursework at Columbia University Teachers College through the Readers and Writers Project. Aaron is also recognized for his experience in instructional coaching and is regularly invited to present at key conferences throughout South America.
Before devoting his path to education, Aaron had a previous career in film and visual arts. With a focus on social justice issues and through community-based art projects, Aaron ultimately realized that in order to create the kind of change he hoped to create in the world it needed to happen through the impact of teaching. Aaron brings these passions to his work as an educator, whether it be through designing learning units that tackle real world problems, or in planning PD experiences that appeal to heart through the integration of video and storytelling.
Aaron graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. He also has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and a Master of Arts in Education from Alliant International University.
In his free time Aaron enjoys filmmaking, photography, hiking, bicycling, reading, traveling, dj-ing, cooking, learning new languages, writing, and most of all, fathering his beautiful Brazilian-Canadian son.
