Student Ambassador Program
Avenues is looking for several Os Primeiros students to serve as representatives for the school at upcoming student and parent events! Student Ambassadors will be asked to join us at the Parent Information Center for evening social events for incoming 6th through 10th grade students in order to present their experience at Avenues so far and to answer students’ questions about the program. Kristen Ahye (kahye@avenues.org) will join us on Monday to present the program to students, and applications will be due on Wednesday, March 28th. Students will be expected to interview with the admissions team before being accepted as Student Ambassadors.

July-August Internship Opportunity for Os Primeiros Students
We are excited to announce an internship opportunity for students who will be in São Paulo for some or all of the winter. Students from the Os Primeiros program will be eligible to apply for an internship that will take place from July 16th to August 20th, with the expectation that students spend between 15 and 20 hours each week at our new campus helping us to prepare for the school opening! Students will serve as tour guides, help to host orientation, work as event hosts for our faculty professional development, and even participate in model classes based on their Os Primeiros experience. Applications will be available soon, and we would encourage any interested students to first apply as Student Ambassadors, which will help prepare them with the skills needed to succeed as an Avenues Intern. Please indicate your interest in summer internship opportunities on the Student Ambassador application form.

What a fantastic journey to the Pantanal and Bonito our students have embarked on. We were happy to welcome two of our New York instructors, Molly Yergens and Mike Yarbrough, along with a group of students from the Avenues New York campus to join this phenomenal study of biodiversity and sustainability alongside the Os Primeiros students. They’re spending the weekend exploring São Paulo with their host families and will be joining the Os Primeiros students at CiviCo on Monday and Tuesday.

This week’s mini-design challenge will ask students to prepare and propose future Global Journeys trips, answering the question, “How might we develop programming for Global Journeys that more effectively addresses issues of environmental and social sustainability for students at the São Paulo and New York campuses?”

Students will make their proposals to Kevin Murungi, Director of Global Journeys, on Tuesday before we bid farewell to our New York friends. Host families are welcome to come see the students off for their departure at 14h00 on Tuesday afternoon if they would like!

Os Primeiros will take the rest of the week off to give teachers and students some much needed rest and relaxation time after some intense weeks of travel and design challenges. We will resume classes at 08h00 on Monday April 2nd when we turn our attention to solving issues concerning Water in São Paulo.

What an incredible week we have had with our first student-centered design challenge at Os Primeiros.  This week, Anne Baldisseri, John Ciallelo, and Ham Clark came to present the students with their first authentic problem: How do we create a sustainable waste management program for the Avenues São Paulo campus?

Students met with Sergio Bispo, a catador who runs his own business, visited Colégio Dante Alighieri to study their recycling and waste program, and had a virtual meeting with the Avenues New York Zero Waste Committee to find inspiration for their designs.  On Friday, we were delighted by five unique, professional, and thoughtful presentations that centered on building school culture, raising awareness, and becoming a more sustainable community. Students reflected thoughtfully on their individual contributions and their work as a group to end the week.  While this was just the first of several challenges that students will tackle in our curriculum this year, we are confident that many of them will return to their creative and impactful proposals for an Avenues waste management program when they are given time to develop a project of their own.

Next week, we will turn our focus to social entrepreneurship and work with some of our partners at Civi-Co to explore design solutions that can transform some of the waste that we generate into reusable materials. We are excited to see our students take on another challenge and watch them grow in their speaking and writing skills, weaving their studies and hard work into a new proposal for making São Paulo more sustainable.

On Saturday, we are joined by more of our New York friends, as teachers Mike Yarbrough and Molly Yergens bring a group of Avenues New York students to join us on the trip to Pantanal and Bonito before spending some time in São Paulo! We are excited to welcome them and to continue to grow our family of international Avenues teachers and students in the Os Primeiros program.

We will have an information session with any last-minute need to know details about our trip and lots of other Os Primeiros topics to discuss! Students are welcomed to stay later on Wednesday, as we will host an English-language board game social where students can play games with teachers and classmates to practice their language skills and have some fun.

Thank you all for an incredible first week of Os Primeiros! We had quite a busy time, with our first parent information sessions, our first proper rotation of classes, guest presentations from professionals in the field of sustainability - Virginia Sodré and Pedro Faria, and a trip to Fazenda Serrinha to view sustainability from a rural and agriculture perspective. Most importantly, we continued to learn and grow together as a community.

Our highlights this week all involved students sharing their learning with us through independent writing, group presentations, well-acted videos, and townhall discussions. Regardless of the forum, students have found many great ways to capture their learning and to continue to develop an understanding of the sustainable issues we face as a society.  We are happy with our introductory week and ready to begin thinking about ways to generate solutions!

On Monday morning, we will welcome our Avenues New York City Peer Ambassadors to the Os Primeiros program. These 12th grade students will join us for the next five weeks to continue to build a bridge between our campuses. To begin with, they will help us run several design challenges this week to introduce the Os Primeiros students to the process of design thinking!

Joining us will be Brandon, Kavin, Dylan, and Fatima, all of whom exemplify what we hope for in our Avenues graduates, and we are thrilled to have them join us for part of their senior year to share their Avenues experience with the Os Primeiros students. Please welcome them warmly, share your love for the city with them, and make them feel included as a part of the OS Primeiros family.
