Yibo Lu returns to Avenues this fall as a Chinese immersion coordinator. She is one of the founding Avenues faculty members and has witnessed the Chinese immersion program develop since she joined us in 2012. In the past 6 years, Yibo has held various roles, including head teacher in 2nd and 3rd grade and Chinese literacy specialist.
During her immersion teaching experience at Avenues, Yibo has refined her understanding of immersion and sharpened her teaching skills. She has created a target-language-only learning environment, balanced language and content, differentiated lessons to meet various students’ needs and explored better ways to collaborate between languages. Moreover, Yibo has been fully involved in various projects, such as developing a Chinese assessment system, which includes oral assessments, leveled reading books, high-frequency word lists and writing rubrics. More recently, she has been consistently looking for ways to further strengthen Chinese program by extending leveled reading books from level N to V, developing Chinese writing curriculum in progression and deepening the connection between assessment and instruction.
Yibo originally came to Avenues from P.S. 94, where she was a dual-language classroom teacher for grade three, integrating Chinese language learning through content areas such as math and social studies. She also immersed students in Chinese culture by directing a class vocal performance during the Lunar New Year.
Yibo’s earlier experience includes working as a student teacher, teaching Mandarin in the 10th grade at East-West School of International Studies in New York. At P.S. 126, she taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to 4th through 8th grades, as well as being exposed to unison reading, broadening her experience of teaching literacy.
Yibo also gained part-time work experience teaching English as a Foreign Language for two years to students in grades 2 through 8 at Only Education Training Organization in Shanghai, China. She compiled teaching materials, trained more than 200 students and was the judge for a competition titled “I Study I Can” at Only.
Yibo received a B.A. from Shanghai Normal University (Shanghai, China), where she was the leading actress in a prize-winning production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream during the school’s first Shakespeare festival. She also received an advanced certificate in teaching Chinese as a second language from East China Normal University, China. She gained her M.A. in TESOL and foreign language education from New York University.
Yibo is a native Mandarin speaker and is familiar with Japanese. She is interested in making crafts and taught her students at P.S. 94 to make 3D pop-up magazines. She has mastered “hard pen” calligraphy, saying, “I love the symmetry, flow and meaning embedded in Chinese characters.” She also enjoys traveling, cooking and singing.
