This fall, Monica Ramos returns to Avenues as a dean of students in grades 6 through 9. Monica joined Avenues in 2012, and has taught in both the Lower and Upper Divisions. During her first year at Avenues, Monica taught Spanish in grades 2, 3, 4, 7 and 8. Later, Monica transitioned into the Upper Division as an English teacher. She also served as interim head of 9th grade during the 2015–16 school year and as project cohort leader for 9th and 10th grade the following year.
Monica originally came to Avenues from Our World Neighborhood Charter School (Queens, NY), where she was a Spanish teacher, 8th grade team leader and chair of the foreign language department. She taught kindergarten through 8th grade, focusing for four years on culturally diverse students in 7th and 8th grades. In addition, she developed an elective class for middle school students on film as literature, as well as supporting struggling students to develop their literacy skills through a school-sponsored reading academy program.
Monica’s other teaching experience has been as a Success for All reading tutor at the Joseph Lanzetta Elementary School in East Harlem and as a high school instructional aid and student teacher in Dinuba, California. She has also been an assistant director, stage manager and teacher at the Cynthia Merrill School of Performing Arts (Fresno, CA), monitoring and directing students ages 3–18.
Monica received a B.A. in English with an emphasis on secondary teaching and a minor in theater from Fresno Pacific University (Fresno, CA), an M.A. in arts and humanities education from New York University and an M.S. in childhood education from Hunter College. She has New York State teaching certification for 1st through 6th grade childhood education and for 7th through 12th grade English education.
Monica is fluent in Spanish and has a basic knowledge of Japanese and French, and is interested in learning Arabic. She has been practicing yoga for 10 years and is also a Soul Cycle enthusiast. Monica is an avid reader of dystopian novels. She loves traveling, trying new foods (chocolate-covered grasshoppers are a recent find) and taking advantage of the theater and art offered in the city. In particular, Monica enjoys exploring the city with her husband and daughter.
