Mike Shaffer joined Avenues in the fall of 2018 as an English teacher in the Upper Division. For five years, he served as a founding middle school humanities teacher at Bushwick Ascend Middle School in Brooklyn. In this role, he developed core values, systems and procedures, while planning and implementing a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. He also taught humanities classes for 3rd, 5th and 6th grades, including reading, writing and social studies. His accomplishments include leading multiple 6th-grade cohorts to proficiency gains of 10% or more on the NY State English Language Arts exam and being featured on Ascend network's website for exemplary humanities instruction.
Mike obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from the Relay Graduate School of Education.
In his spare time, he enjoys running along the Brooklyn Bridge waterfront, doing the New York Times crossword, playing bass, and reading—he is always on the lookout for book recommendations!
