Melanie Silverman joined Avenues in the fall of 2018 as an Avenues Interim Masters (AIM) intern in the Lower Division. She most recently served as a 6th grade apprentice teacher at New Canaan Country School in Connecticut, where she conducted lessons in youth literature, critical thinking, vocabulary and grammar. She also collaborated with the lead teacher to create lessons plans and goals for classes across the curriculum and provided students with strategies for time management, organization, study habits and classroom engagement. While at New Canaan, Melanie also served as a 4th grade apprentice teacher, managing classroom expectations and behavior and leading daily discussions and creating, planning and teaching lessons in math, writing, social studies and community building. Melanie has also tutored privately and on a volunteer basis in New Canaan and through Hamilton Central Schools in Hamilton, NY.
Melanie received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Colgate University and studied liberal arts and business through a study abroad exchange in Barcelona, Spain, where she exercised Spanish-speaking skills and assisted a local church in serving food to the homeless and impoverished area residents. As of 2018, she is pursuing a master’s degree in elementary inclusive education through Teachers College at Columbia University.
In her spare time, Melanie enjoys spending time with her friends and family, and taking long walks while exploring the city. Living on her own for the first time, Melanie hopes to expand her knowledge of and expertise in cooking and baking. She also loves reading novels, discovering new television shows and singing.
