The Invention Convention at Avenues

Jennette Mullaney

Have you ever wondered how you could keep cool while sleeping?

Have you ever been getting ready for school and realized you forgot your notebook?

Have you ever worried about your child at the park on an unsafe structure?

These are a few of the questions that our 3rd graders sought to answer while preparing for the annual Invention Convention. These innovative students challenged themselves to discover how to make painting your nails a breeze, or how to deal (kindly) with your annoying siblings! Along the way, the kids learned a good deal of math, science, vocabulary and, of course, design.

The students also had the opportunity to work with the real-life designers at Quirky, a local business that helps people—including kids—realize their own inventions. When it came time to present their creations at the Invention Convention itself, the third-graders had learned the most important lesson of all: how to overcome setbacks to invent something new.
