The 2018 Lunar New Year (a.k.a. Spring Festival, 春节) took place on February 16. We said "goodbye!" to the year of the rooster and saying "hello! " to the year of the dog on that day. In order to celebrate Lunar New Year, our middle grade Chinese classes have started a special Spring Festival cultural learning curriculum.

In class, students not only learned about the “do’s and dont’s” of Lunar New Year, they also learned about how Chinese people follow a day-by-day guide to do New Year’s preparation seven days before the Lunar New Year’s eve.

Chinese calligraphy

In a reflection of how Chinese people decorate their houses before the New Year, our students wrote four-character idioms of well wishes using calligraphy brushes. Instead of posting the good wishes on the doors, they decorated the seventh floor commons with all their best wishes for the whole school. Our students also did some New Year’s paper cuttings in the shapes of dogs, the Chinese character for happiness, various flowers and other objects. Each of them represents a different wish.

After getting all the decorations done, we had our Lunar New Year must-have celebration, which is making dumplings together. Chinese people like to put one coin in one of the dumplings so that the person who eats that dumpling on New Year’s Day is considered to be the luckiest one in the whole family. When our students were making dumplings, instead of coin, they put one candy in one of the dumplings and hoped to get the most luck for the New Year. After finishing making dumplings, we shared our cooked dumplings with middle grades students and faculties. We want to wish our Avenues family a happy and prosperous Dog Year!
