"Live" Collage Portraits Unpack Notions of Representing Self, Grade 9
Kate Howard

During their photography unit on Identity, 9th grade artists fittingly explored the genre of portraiture.  After the initial photo sessions where students worked with traditional strategies, they experimented with the "Live" collage portrait.

Inspired by the masterful, Dada artist, Hannah Höch, who was one of the originators of the photomontage, students worked on their own alternative portraits.  This process involved sieving through magazines to discover expressive elements that could be collaged into a mask. For the final photograph, students wore their masks.

The exercise opened ways of seeing more abstractly, which in turn invited students to brake away from the norms of how identity should be represented.
