Grade 8: Visual Communication and The Art of The Collagraph
Kate Howard

For this project, 8th graders explored the art of Collagraphy, a printmaking process through which a variety of materials are arranged and glued onto a rigid surface.

Students were challenged to communicate a personal, social, or global message using a word, phrase or quote. Students practiced font selection, cutting, gluing and layering of letters and shapes to create a compositionally unified collagraph plate design that effectively communicated their messages’ intended meanings. Students practiced these techniques through iteration and revision. Color choices were made based on how well they reinforced the intended meaning of the particular word, phrase or quote. Each student pulled their individual print using a printing press.
