Grade 5 Cuts and Pastes Self-Portraits
Kate Howard

Fifth graders recently explored the art of collage while thinking about the theme of identity. To do this, they asked essential questions about themselves like: How do I describe myself? What are my interests?  What are some symbols that represent me? They learned about different compositions and ways to make a unified and visually balanced image using a wide variety of parts. Over multiple classes, the fifth graders collaged a photograph of themselves with magazine, decorative paper, and printed images. In the final weeks, students added sharpie patterns or painted details.  Please visit the 1st floor Music Hallway to see all of the 5th grade collage portraits!  The show will be installed through January.
