8th grade students explored text as a surface for mixed combinations of painting, drawing, and newly altered found prose. Beginning with an exploration of materials and techniques for layering, they investigated and experimented with gouache painting, paint markers, and additional materials such as thread, balsa wood, metallic paper, and found collage materials. After selecting personal memoir excerpts by Susan Sontag and David Sedaris that were examined in their English class, students responded to the words of their pages, considering how they would artistically treat the text, integrate painting and drawing, and perhaps create a new poem or way of viewing the words.
