Sixth Graders Get Their Hands Dirty at the Gowanus Canal

The science and World Course teachers for two 6th grade sections have teamed up for an exciting project that combines increased knowledge about the New York water system with community engagement and design thinking! Last week, we visited the Gowanus Canal Conservancy for the first of three field trips related to this project. The Conservancy works on protecting and cleaning the Canal, which is a Superfund site.

Celebrating Lunar New Year at Hudson Guild with Seven Chinese Songs – and Their Fascinating Histories

For the second year in a row, the 4th grade chorus was off to give a special Lunar New Year performance for Chinese seniors at the Hudson Guild – a unique form of community engagement spearheaded by Lower Division music teacher Mimi Hsu.

Meet AnaMaria Correa
Director of community engagement and inclusion. In her role at Avenues, AnaMaria is responsible for supporting the practice, protocol and intentionality in community engagement as well as facilitating and informing practices and awareness around access, equity, race and diversity. Her work will support an inclusive and embodied practice of welcome, respect and safety both inside and outside of the Avenues school community.

SIGN UP FOR IT’S MY PARK DAY WITH FRIENDS OF HUDSON RIVER PARK + AVENUES

Avenues is partnering with FOHRP for three exciting programs on Saturday, May 20th during the citywide ‘It’s My Park Day’. Students will have the opportunity to plant, beautify, compost, and mulch together with their classmates and peers. Open to all ages, $35/participant (for supplies and teachers)
