This fall’s earthquakes in Mexico and devastating storms in Puerto Rico deeply affected members of our teaching team. One of our teachers saw an opportunity for children to learn compassion with the use of Alvaro F. Villa’s Flood, a moving and wordless eBook.

This fall, 5th graders from Avenues traveled about two hours out of the city to Black Rock Forest for an educational and recreational day trip. The Black Rock Forest Consortium is a “living laboratory for field-based research and education, encompassing native terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that are increasingly rare in the region.”

Anyone familiar with the Avenues mission knows that the school values global mindedness and the idea that one must be able to be comfortable outside their normal surroundings. On February 13, Lilly, a 5th grader from Wisconsin, visited the Palms class. Lilly was able to have lunch with the class and took a guided tour of the school.

For the third annual Awareness Day at Avenues, students were given the opportunity to deeply examine issues of class and privilege with honesty and respect. Among the day’s activities were such workshops as “The Politics of Economic Privilege” and “Hospital Bill$: The Intersection of Class and Health” that encouraged students to let down their guards and participate meaningfully in discussions with each other.

Acts of Kindness in Pre-K

With a new configuration of students, and some students brand new to Avenues, it was important to establish a classroom community of inclusivity and respect. We first created a list of classroom rules – child-generated ideas that everyone agreed on to help keep our bodies, our classroom and our school safe and happy.

Like many of the students at our school, rising junior Brandon Bunt is a champion of the Avenues mission statement. Because of his dedication to the Avenues ideal, this spring Brandon’s peers elected him student body president of the Upper Division.
