    "We took a 6th grade project from New York (building a weather station), and the 6th grade students in Uganda showed us they could do it, too—no problem. That’s when I thought, heck, this might really work,” says Julia Higdon, research scientist at Avenues: The World School. Over the course of this entire school year, the Silver Cats and Rabbits pre-kindergarten classes took a journey into the world of art, in which they practiced looking at (and making) sculptures, paintings, collages and assemblages. By learning about some of the different ways visual artists express themselves, the children were able to experiment meaningfully with self-expression themselves and take their own creativity more seriously.  More...

Deborah first joined Avenues in spring 2014 as a learning specialist in the middle grades program. In fall 2015, she became the middle grades program curriculum specialist for the humanities while overseeing the middle grades program WORLD cohorts.
