"We took a 6th grade project from New York (building a weather station), and the 6th grade students in Uganda showed us they could do it, too—no problem. We wanted to give students an opportunity to represent their emotions artistically. We decided to do a clay portrait project, in which the children formed their own faces out of clay. This activity fostered language development, fine motor skill development, collaboration, eye-hand coordination and cultural and body awareness.

“Everything I do in China, whether it’s buying vegetables or telling jokes, is a form of cultural exchange,” Jesse Appell told Avenues students during his visit last November. Based in Beijing for the past four years, Jesse has forged a career as a cultural intermediary between China and America.

Because first graders had been studying friendship as part of their World Course curriculum, we thought a wonderful way of combining this study with the writing skills they were working to learn would be to engage in a “Book on Friendship” project, in which students could become authors of their very own books.

Over the course of this entire school year, the Silver Cats and Rabbits pre-kindergarten classes took a journey into the world of art, in which they practiced looking at (and making) sculptures, paintings, collages and assemblages. By learning about some of the different ways visual artists express themselves, the children were able to experiment meaningfully with self-expression themselves and take their own creativity more seriously.

Deborah first joined Avenues in spring 2014 as a learning specialist in the middle grades program. In fall 2015, she became the middle grades program curriculum specialist for the humanities while overseeing the middle grades program WORLD cohorts. In fall 2016, she will become the director of student success.
