It was nearly two years ago now that a small group of soon-to-be birders set out on a mission: to learn as much as they could about birding (otherwise known as "bird-watching") in the short window of time after the sun rises and the school day begins.

17 Avenues students in grades 8 through 11 received awards for their “superior talent and achievement” in the written word. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7 through 12.

As part of Global Journeys, the Avenues Upper Division music department had the great fortune of making a trip to Botswana over spring break. Ten upper grades musicians and three teachers made the 15-hour flight for a 10-day musical collaboration with the world-class student marimba band of the Maru-a-Pula school in Gabarone, Botswana.

Art historian Meredith Mowder kicked off the 9th grade students’ return from spring break with the first of a series of four mini art history lectures on modern art.

Crystal A. Bates joined Avenues in spring 2017 as a dean of students for grades 10 through 12. Crystal comes to Avenues from NYU, where she spent more than a decade in admissions and enrollment management roles.

This February, 15 Upper Division Avenues artists were recognized for their “superior talent and achievement” in visual art and awarded Scholastic Art Awards. The Scholastic Art Awards represent the most comprehensive national assessment of the creative spirit among American teens.

On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.

“Everything I do in China, whether it’s buying vegetables or telling jokes, is a form of cultural exchange,” Jesse Appell told Avenues students during his visit last November. Based in Beijing for the past four years, Jesse has forged a career as a cultural intermediary between China and America.
