"We took a 6th grade project from New York (building a weather station), and the 6th grade students in Uganda showed us they could do it, too—no problem. On October 2, a group of 13 visited the Dodge Poetry Festival, a biennial four-day celebration of the art form in Newark, NJ. A smaller group of students attended the festival two years ago, but this year's group had more than doubled in size, proof of Avenues students' ever-growing interest in the written and spoken word.

For the past several weeks, Avenues Upper Division Spanish 5 classes have been communicating with students from Liceo 7, an all-girls school in Santiago, Chile. The idea of the project is to have students converse in both English and Spanish to practice their second language outside of the classroom, while acting as a sort of linguistic mentor to their pen pals to teach their native language.

Avenues upper grade students designed and built a “tiny house”—literally a house that cannot exceed 100 square feet—for the science nonprofit Black Rock Forest Consortium.

Students throughout the school will be building a “stripped-down” version of a Hello Hub, learning about community-led projects and gaining insight into what it’s like to build something for real-world use that is truly life changing for people in remote and marginalized communities.

Brendan Dolan is the instrumental music instructor for the Upper Division. Previously, he'd worked as a private and group instructor for children ages five through 18 in classical, pop and Irish music on piano, flute, tin whistle, drums and guitar.
