Each week, the Tigers and Butterflies engage in a phonics game known as What’s in the Bag? In this game, children are tasked with brainstorming a list of items that begin with a “clue” sound given to them by the teacher. The rules are simple; you must raise your hand, and your guesses must be appropriate for school.

On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.

It all started with a simple conversation about kindness back in September. With a new configuration of students, and some students brand new to Avenues, it was important to establish a classroom community of inclusivity and respect. We first created a list of classroom rules – child-generated ideas that everyone agreed on to help keep our bodies, our classroom and our school safe and happy.
