Students gave their regards to Broadway during the toe-tapping, song-singing, subway-hopping, intensive Minimester week as they learned the ins and outs of the theater world and got to know some of the people behind the scenes of Broadway productions.

In the weeklong Mahjong Master Minimester course students had the opportunity to learn Chinese Mahjong, a game deeply ingrained in Asian culture and popular around the world.

During Med School 101 Minimester, 7th and 8th grade Avenues students were engaged in learning about the field of medicine, opening up their eyes, brains and hearts to all the possibilities the field has to offer.

In the Iron Chef Avenues Minimester course, students had the opportunity to not only hone their cooking skills but also to think outside of the box, grocery shop on a budget, learn about different cultures, prepare food properly (and clean up!), practice public speaking, work collaboratively and engage in friendly competition.

“Build a Rube Goldberg Machine” was one of the new courses for Minimester this year. A Rube Goldberg machine is an overly complex contraption used to solve a simple task.

During last year’s “Blues, Jazz and Hip-Hop” Minimester class, jazz legend Larry Coryell came by to play a few songs and impart wisdom from his long career.

This year, the “Read, Eat, Write” Minimester course combined a love for food and a passion for writing. The objective of the course was to expose students to the different types of writing that could come from a passion about food and to give them an opportunity to try their hand at some of those pieces in a structured writing workshop.
This spring, students in the Middle School Minimester course “Humans of New York: Avenues Edition” had an opportunity to photograph and interview members of the Avenues community, as well as our neighbors in Chelsea Market, along the High Line and on subway platforms.
Students explore the relationship between visual art and music during an interdisciplinary Minimester course.

On April 20, the Middle School kicked off its third annual Minimester. The Minimester program is a week of curriculum that offers students an opportunity to further their interest in a particular passion or to investigate a new one.
