Just days before spring break, upper school students were greeted in Food by the smiling faces of The Highliner staff in what has become something of a treasured ritual. As upper graders shuffled out of the elevators for lunch, they received fresh copies of The Highliner Issue VIII.

After three months of journalistic inquiry, collaboration and research, Upper School students released the fall 2015 issue of The Highliner on December 11.

This summer, The Highliner offered Upper School students the chance to learn the ins and outs of writing for a publication. Students attended twice-weekly video conferences with Mr. Mendel as they studied and engaged in journalistic and creative writing. The program culminated with an exclusive summer issue, available in hard-copy print, as well as a pdf version.
Early this fall, a team of 25 Upper School students assembled on the eighth floor to produce a new student-led publication for the Avenues Upper School community. What they had in mind was the production of a school newspaper; after all, most high schools have a newspaper, and the team felt their peers deserved a reliable news source to report on various activities around the school.

Daniel Mendel joins Avenues in September as an Upper School English teacher. He is familiar to many Upper School students, as he spent the last half of the 2013-2014 school year teaching tenth grade English and overseeing the Upper School Writing Center.

In late May, Sam Roberts of the New York Times met with Upper School students interested in revitalizing the school newspaper. Over 30 students had the unique privilege of joining an open discussion with Mr. Roberts as he provided advice and insights on high school newspapers and the field of journalism at large.

This year we are excited to announce that our Lower School students will be participating in the Press 4 Kids program, News-O-Matic. News-O-Matic is an app that provides children from the ages of 7-11 with a daily newspaper. Many of our students already have the app on their iPads, but this year they had the opportunity to help choose the news.

Sam Roberts will be Avenues’ senior advisor for journalism beginning this summer. He has a long and distinguished career at the New York Times, where he has been the urban affairs correspondent since 2005. A leader at the Times in many roles since he joined the paper,
