"We took a 6th grade project from New York (building a weather station), and the 6th grade students in Uganda showed us they could do it, too—no problem. On October 2, a group of 13 visited the Dodge Poetry Festival, a biennial four-day celebration of the art form in Newark, NJ. A smaller group of students attended the festival two years ago, but this year's group had more than doubled in size, proof of Avenues students' ever-growing interest in the written and spoken word.

Jessi Himmelsbach first joined Avenues in fall 2014 as an associate teacher in an English section of grade one. After spending two years with grade one, Jessi returns this fall as a head teacher in an English section of grade two.

Rob Davis joined Avenues in the fall of 2014 as an associate teacher in one of the English sections of pre-kindergarten (in the immersion classes, nursery through grade four, children spend alternate days in a class conducted in English and in a class conducted in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese). In the fall of 2016, Rob will return as co-head teacher of an English section of pre-K.

For the second year in a row, the fifth grade humanities team created an interdisciplinary unit based on Brian Selznick's Wonderstruck. This year we expanded the unit to encompass debate, art and drama.
