Each week, the Tigers and Butterflies engage in a phonics game known as What’s in the Bag? In this game, children are tasked with brainstorming a list of items that begin with a “clue” sound given to them by the teacher. On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.

We wanted to give students an opportunity to represent their emotions artistically. We decided to do a clay portrait project, in which the children formed their own faces out of clay. This activity fostered language development, fine motor skill development, collaboration, eye-hand coordination and cultural and body awareness.

It all started with a simple conversation about kindness back in September. With a new configuration of students, and some students brand new to Avenues, it was important to establish a classroom community of inclusivity and respect. We first created a list of classroom rules – child-generated ideas that everyone agreed on to help keep our bodies, our classroom and our school safe and happy.
