On the morning of Sunday, May 17, eight Upper School ninth-grade students and their chaperones, Mr. Misler and Ms. Ahye, met at the southeast corner of Central Park as they prepared to walk in the 30th annual AIDS Walk NYC. This was the third year Avenues has participated in the AIDS Walk.

When I was in third grade, I performed in a New York State speaking competition in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. What this entailed, as best as I can remember, was two things: memorizing and reciting a snippet of one of Dr. King’s speeches; and, after donning a blue blazer and a pair of gray dress slacks, having my mom choke me with a too tightly cinched tie.
