Students gave their regards to Broadway during the toe-tapping, song-singing, subway-hopping, intensive Minimester week as they learned the ins and outs of the theater world and got to know some of the people behind the scenes of Broadway productions.

In the weeklong Mahjong Master Minimester course students had the opportunity to learn Chinese Mahjong, a game deeply ingrained in Asian culture and popular around the world.

The science and World Course teachers for two 6th grade sections have teamed up for an exciting project that combines increased knowledge about the New York water system with community engagement and design thinking!

Avenues 6th graders had the opportunity to hear from a special speaker earlier this year, Tonderai Chikuhwa, father of 6th grader Thandi Chikuhwa. Mr. Chikuhwa’s presentation concluded a unit in which 6th graders read Linda Sue Park’s powerful novel A Long Walk to Water, which tells the story of Salva Dut, one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan, a refugee who covered much of the African continent on foot in an attempt to escape the violence of his country’s civil war and be reunited with his family.

Since first joining Avenues in 2013, Bridget Sabala has served as a middle grades math teacher in the Upper Division, in addition to spending one year overseeing the middle grades Minimester program and another as the STEAM cohort leader for grades five and six.

Over spring break, 18 middle grades students and four Avenues teachers hopped on a plane to China to live with homestay families in Guilin. The homestay experience encouraged true cross-cultural exchanges in which our students shared stories about their lives in the big American city of New York and their homestay families shared their experiences living in a small Chinese city.

Every Tuesday since October, a small group of 6th and 7th graders have met to debate and discuss the best strategies to solve a wide range of math problems. Topics include probability, geometry, algebra and number sense and make use of analytical thinking and math creativity. All of this is part of their preparation for monthly math competitions.

Over spring break, a group of Avenues middle grades students spent 12 days in Argentina hosted by Holy Trinity College in Mar del Plata. This marked Avenues’ first true exchange program; students from Holy Trinity joined us in New York in January.

Our middle grades Chinese-speaking students celebrated Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival in February. In Chinese class, students not only learned about the do’s and dont’s for the Lunar New Year, but also about how those who celebrate start to prepare for this holiday seven days before the Chinese New Year’s Eve, and continue to celebrate the holiday until the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.
