For the second year in a row, the 4th grade chorus was off to give a special Lunar New Year performance for Chinese seniors at the Hudson Guild – a unique form of community engagement spearheaded by Lower Division music teacher Mimi Hsu.

On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.

Writing math problems encourages meaningful communication of mathematics, promotes problem-solving skills, allows for differentiation in the classroom and slows down the thinking process. With this in mind, I showed recently the girls in the Girls Who Math club some examples of the type of problems Ms. Scully’s class of fourth graders were solving in math and we decided to write similar problems with a Valentine’s theme.

Angela Ji Xu first joined Avenues in fall 2012 as the head teacher in a Chinese section of kindergarten (in the immersion classes, nursery through grade three, children spend half their day in a class conducted in English and half in a class conducted in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese). In fall 2014, she went on to become the immersion coordinator for Chinese teachers in the Early Learning Center (nursery through kindergarten) and Lower Division (first through fifth grade).

Rosalyn McCaine is a dedicated artist who has served as an art teacher in the Lower Division Spanish immersion classes since she first joined Avenues in 2012. She brings a warmth and a wide range of experience to the students she teaches in kindergarten through grade five.

Stacy Rezos first joined Avenues for the 2014-2015 school year as a head teacher in a Spanish section of the fourth grade. She returns to the fourth grade this fall as a head teacher in an English section.
Dan Wallace joined Avenues in fall 2012 as an associate teacher in an English section of first grade. In fall 2016, he will leave first grade to become head teacher of an English section of grade four.
