On Sunday, February 26, Avenues held its first Ruckus Constructus, a school-wide family STEAM event created by Avenues faculty, parents and students. The turnout was overwhelming, with more than 1,200 people from the community in attendance and the building came to life with almost 50 hands-on sessions.

Recently, we welcomed celebrated author Grace Lin to join ELC and Lower Division students in the Black Box to read from her books, talk about what inspires her, how she creates her illustrations and how many of her stories are “true.”

Angela Ji Xu first joined Avenues in fall 2012 as the head teacher in a Chinese section of kindergarten (in the immersion classes, nursery through grade three, children spend half their day in a class conducted in English and half in a class conducted in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese). In fall 2014, she went on to become the immersion coordinator for Chinese teachers in the Early Learning Center (nursery through kindergarten) and Lower Division (first through fifth grade).

Rosalyn McCaine is a dedicated artist who has served as an art teacher in the Lower Division Spanish immersion classes since she first joined Avenues in 2012. She brings a warmth and a wide range of experience to the students she teaches in kindergarten through grade five.

Ying Tso first joined Avenues in 2013 as an associate teacher in a Chinese section of kindergarten. This fall, she will now become head teacher of her own Chinese section of second grade.

Melissa Kubin first joined Avenues in 2012 as a head teacher in an English section of first grade, a role in which she remained for three years. In 2015, she became the head of first grade. This fall, we are happy to welcome her back as an associate head of grade two.

Sebastian Loza joined Avenues in fall 2015 as an intern in the Avenues Interim Mastery program (A.I.M.). In fall 2016, he will become an associate teacher in a Spanish section of grade two.

Stephany Arcentales first joined Avenues in fall 2013 as a Lower Division science teacher. This fall, she will continue teaching Lower Division science while taking on the additional role of Lower Division science coordinator.

This fall, Gabriela Cabido-Carr will become head teacher of a Spanish section of grade two, where she may even have the opportunity to spend another year with some of her past kindergarten students.
As part of their yearlong cumulative capstone, second grade students spent months creating model habitats. What was so impressive was that these models were the product of a collaboration formerly unseen in these children’s lives.
