The term “Social Innovation” refers to an idea, a concept or an organization with the primary goal of solving a problem that benefits society at large, rather than private individuals. One of the best-known examples is TOMS Shoes, whose one-for-one policy donates a pair of shoes to those in need for every pair purchased.
In the spring of our inaugural year, Ivan Cestero and Kim Allen, co-coordinators of Avenues Community Engagement, organized the Social Innovation Workshop. This two-day intensive workshop took Avenues ninth grade students out of their classrooms and into the offices of local creative, design and charitable organizations to gain hands-on experience about practical and creative thinking for the greater good.
The Social Innovation Workshop is one step Avenues has taken toward showing students all the possible approaches they can take to make a global difference.
